Normalement, l'Excuse est protégée et revient au camp qui l'a jouée, mais si elle est jouée au dernier pli elle est perdue au profit du camp qui gagne ce pli, sauf cas particulier du chelem.

Short answer
Normally, the Excuse is protected and returns to the side that played it, but if it is played on the last trick it is lost to the side that wins that trick, except for the special slam case.
Pourquoi le dernier pli change tout
- Pendant la donne, l'Excuse vous dispense de fournir et s'échange contre une petite carte au décompte.
- Au dernier pli, cette protection ne fonctionne plus dans la règle normale : le gagnant du pli la conserve.
- En cas de chelem réussi, un traitement spécial peut permettre de jouer l'Excuse à la fin sans la perte habituelle.
Why the last trick matters
- During the hand, the Excuse excuses you from following suit and is exchanged for a low card at scoring.
- On the final trick, that protection no longer works in the normal rule: the winner of the trick keeps it.
- With a successful slam, special handling can let the Excuse be played at the end without the usual loss.
